A Portrait of Solitude

 

José Villarreal Jr. spent 27 years of his first 45 years of life in prison--ten of these in solitary confinement in Pelican Bay CA. The film's focus is on the psychological strategies and coping mechanisms he developed to maintain any level of sanity in the torturous environment of solitary confinement. Josè also delves into his struggles with PTSD and rehabilitation.
